Laser acupuncture – needle-free acupuncture in Hamburg
Laser acupuncture is a needle-free form of acupuncture. Instead of needles, defined acupuncture and trigger points are irradiated with a medical soft laser. The aim is to modulate pain, promote microcirculation and soothe irritated tissue - without puncturing the skin and generally causing little pain. In our orthopedic practice at Dorotheenstraße 48, 22301 Hamburg, we use laser acupuncture as a conservative, well-tolerated supplement to exercise therapy, physiotherapy and classic acupuncture.

What is laser acupuncture?
With laser acupuncture, acupuncture points, myofascial trigger points or painful tissue are stimulated with low-energy laser light. The skin is not injured. The procedure is part of photobiomodulation and combines concepts of traditional acupuncture with modern light therapy.
- Needle-free: no skin puncture, usually painless
- Gentle on tissue: suitable for sensitive skin or anticoagulation
- Targeted: Use on acupuncture and trigger points
- Flexible timing: short treatment duration per point
Laser acupuncture can be used alone or in combination with body acupuncture, trigger point or electroacupuncture - depending on the findings and goals.
Active principle and study situation
The low-power laser light is absorbed into superficial tissue layers. It can influence biochemical processes in cells (photobiomodulation), such as mitochondrial activity and the release of messenger substances that are involved in pain and inflammatory processes.
- Modulation of pain signals via peripheral nerves
- Improvement of microcirculation and tissue metabolism
- Possible reduction of local inflammatory mediators
- Relaxation of myofascial trigger points
The scientific data is heterogeneous. For some musculoskeletal complaints (e.g. neck and shoulder pain, myofascial trigger points, knee osteoarthritis), studies show evidence of a symptom-relieving effect - often small to moderate and dependent on dose, wavelength and point protocol. Evidence for other indications is limited. We therefore use laser acupuncture in an evidence-conscious manner as a supplementary component within a conservative overall concept.
Indications in orthopedics
Laser acupuncture is particularly suitable for the accompanying treatment of functional and painful problems of the musculoskeletal system - especially if a needle-free, gentle option is desired.
- Myofascial pain and trigger points (neck, shoulder, back and buttocks muscles)
- Cervical and lumbar pain (e.g. due to muscular imbalances, accompanying facet syndrome)
- Tendinopathies and irritation conditions (golfer's and tennis elbow, Achilles tendon, patellar tendon)
- Plantar fasciitis/heel pain
- Osteoarthritis-related pain (e.g. knee, saddle of the thumb joint) – as a supplementary measure
- Periarthropathies of the shoulder (subacromial syndrome, biceps tendon irritation) – in combination with exercise therapy
- Mild scarring and soft tissue discomfort after sufficient healing
Important information: If there are acute warning signs (e.g. severe pain at rest, fever, sudden feeling of paralysis or numbness, injury from a fall), a medical consultation is required beforehand. Structural changes (e.g. severe osteoarthritis, cracks) are not “repaired” by laser acupuncture, but the method can modulate symptoms and better enable active therapy.
Process in our practice in Hamburg
Your treatment will take place in our practice at Dorotheenstraße 48, 22301 Hamburg. We plan each session individually – based on your history, examination and your goals.
Duration and frequency: 6-10 sessions are often scheduled at intervals of 1-2 weeks. A single session usually lasts 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of points. Initial changes vary greatly from person to person; Often there is a gradual improvement over several appointments.
- Bring with you: existing findings/images, medication list, sports equipment if necessary
- Preparation: no special fasting required, please do not apply any cream to the region to be treated immediately before the appointment
- After the session: normal everyday activities are usually possible; Individually coordinate intensive new stresses on the same day
Advantages and limitations
- Needle-free and generally painless – suitable for those with needle phobia
- No skin puncture - beneficial for anticoagulation or sensitive skin
- Easy to combine with physiotherapy, training and classic acupuncture
- Targeted, short applications with a low risk of side effects
- Limitations: does not replace cause-oriented diagnostics and active therapy
- In the case of structural damage, alone is rarely sufficient - it makes sense as a supplement
- Effect varies from person to person; not every complaint is addressed
- No “immediate cure” – realistic expectations and treatment plan are key
Safety, side effects and contraindications
Laser acupuncture is considered to be well tolerated when used professionally. We work with medically approved equipment and consistently use eye protection.
- Common: no or only mild, temporary reactions (feeling of warmth, slight redness)
- Rare: short-term increase in stimulus (“initial reaction”) or tiredness
- Very rare: skin irritations; If used correctly, no thermal burns
- Do not treat over known malignant tumors or unclear lesions in the target area
- No direct irradiation of the eyes; consistent eye protection
- Be careful if you have known photosensitivity (illness/medication) – dose adjustment or alternatives if necessary
- Pregnancy: no irradiation of certain acupuncture points with labor-stimulating potential; Avoid stomach/pelvic region
- Do not use on fresh wounds, acute skin infections or active bleeding
- Avoid the thyroid region and growth plates in children
Metal implants and pacemakers usually do not pose a limitation because they involve light and not electrical stimulation. We clarify individual characteristics in advance in a discussion.
Combinations in a conservative overall concept
Sustainable improvement often occurs through a combination of passive and active measures. Laser acupuncture can modulate discomfort so you can better implement exercises, everyday adjustments and training.
- Physiotherapy and active exercise programs (mobility, strength, coordination)
- Ergonomics and stress advice at work and in sport
- Myofascial treatment/trigger point therapy (manual or with acupuncture)
- Body acupuncture, ear acupuncture or skull acupuncture (YNSA) – depending on the findings
- Electroacupuncture for additional stimulation (if necessary)
- If necessary, temporary medication-based pain modulation after medical consideration
We will discuss transparently whether laser acupuncture makes sense in your case or whether other procedures are likely to be more beneficial.
Who is the needle-free method suitable for?
- People with needle phobia or negative experience with needle acupuncture
- Patients under anticoagulation for whom skin punctures should be avoided
- Children and people sensitive to pain (depending on age and indication according to medical assessment)
- Sensitive areas or scar tissue (after complete healing)
- Athletes who are looking for well-tolerated, complementary pain modulation
- Working people with little time – short, targeted sessions
Costs and reimbursement
Laser acupuncture is usually a self-pay service. Private health insurance companies partially reimburse depending on the tariff and individual reasons; Statutory health insurance companies usually do not cover the costs. Before you start, you will receive transparent information about the expected costs. If requested, we will prepare a cost estimate for clarification with your insurance company.
