Orthobiology

Orthobiology uses the body's own mechanisms to stimulate healing processes in the musculoskeletal system and relieve pain. These include procedures such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP/ACP), hyaluronic acid injections and other biologically effective injection therapies. In our orthopedic practice in Hamburg-Winterhude (Dorotheenstrasse 48, 22301 Hamburg) we use orthobiological procedures responsibly - always in combination with conservative orthopedics, targeted physiotherapy and a realistic risk-benefit assessment.

FAQ

PRP/ACP are platelet-rich plasmas from your own blood with growth factors. ACS is a cytokine-modulated serum obtained from your own blood. All aim at inflammation modulation and tissue healing, but differ in their production, composition and study. The choice depends on the findings, goal and evidence.

Depending on the indication, 1-3 sessions, sometimes up to 4, with intervals between 1 and 4 weeks. Serial applications (e.g. 1–3) are common for hyaluronic acid. We set the protocol individually and evaluate the progress.

The first effects can appear after 2-6 weeks. In the case of tendinopathies, long-term rehabilitation is crucial; in osteoarthritis, improvements are often gradual. Some patients benefit significantly, others less so - we evaluate honestly and make adjustments.

It can be uncomfortable for a short time. We work with thin needles, sterile technology and – if appropriate – local anesthesia. Temporary pain/swelling may occur after the injection.

Yes, but controlled. After 24-48 hours of protection, a gradual build-up takes place with physiotherapeutic support. Intensity and return-to-sport are based on structural healing, pain and functional testing.

If osteoarthritis is very advanced, the benefit is usually limited. The aim can then be more of a temporary relief. We discuss conservative alternatives and, if necessary, operational options in a network.

Anticoagulants are not a general exclusion criterion, but they do increase the risk of bleeding. Adjustments are only made after individual medical consultation. Never stop taking medication yourself.

Cortisone can reduce pain in the short term, but is to be assessed cautiously on tendon tissue and is not always sustainable in the case of osteoarthritis. Orthobiological procedures are aimed more at medium/long-term improvements. The decision is individual.

No fixed age limit. Diagnosis, functional goals, comorbidities and the feasibility of active rehabilitation are crucial.

We inject under sterile conditions, often using ultrasound guidance for precise placement. We discuss risks, benefits, alternatives and aftercare in advance.
