Individualized herbal recipes
Individualized herbal recipes are tailor-made herbal mixtures that we use in our Hamburg practice as accompanying components of conservative orthopedics. The aim is not a quick “miracle cure”, but rather professionally sound support for problems with the musculoskeletal system – for example through inflammation-modulating, pain-relieving or metabolism-regulating effects. The basis is careful diagnostics, clear therapy goals and tested quality of the raw materials.

What does individualized herbal formulation mean?
In contrast to standardized ready-made preparations, individualized recipes are put together from several suitable plant components - adapted to your symptoms, your accompanying illnesses and your medication. Focus areas such as inflammation modulation, tissue regeneration or muscle and tendon relaxation can be combined.
- Personalization: Selection of plants according to findings, goals and tolerability
- Modular structure: base + symptom and functional components
- Customizable dosage and dosage form (tea, granules, decoction)
We work in an evidence-conscious manner: Where possible, we rely on pharmacological and clinical data from phytotherapy as well as proven recipe logic, including from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Importance in conservative orthopedics
Herbal recipes do not replace guideline-based orthopedics. However, they can provide functional support - for example, to calm irritations, promote mobility and accompany conservative core measures such as physiotherapy, activity adjustment and weight management.
- Inflammation modulation in joint and tendon irritations
- Supporting microcirculation and tissue metabolism
- Muscular relaxation and subjective pain reduction
- Options for patients who do not tolerate common analgesics well
Depending on the situation, we combine recipes with measures such as manual therapy, training control, ergonomic advice or infiltrations - always according to individual indications.
Typical areas of application (examples)
The selection is based on the diagnosis, the course and your therapy goals. Examples of questions for which individualized mixtures can be considered:
- Arthritis-related complaints (e.g. knees, hips, hands) with irritation
- Tendinopathies and tendon irritations (e.g. Achilles tendon, tennis elbow)
- Facet and myofascial back pain
- Irritation of bursa and soft tissues
- Stress-related tendency to swell and stiffness
- Metabolism and regeneration support with moderate exercise
Examples of herbal components that can be used - depending on individual suitability: willow bark (Salix), devil's claw (Harpagophytum), turmeric (Curcuma), ginger (Zingiber), frankincense (Boswellia), nettle (Urtica), meadowsweet (Filipendula). In TCM-oriented mixtures, among other things, Du Huo, Fang Feng, Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong, Eucommia or Dipsacus can be considered. The specific selection always depends on your personal situation and tolerance.
This is how your personal recipe is created
It is important to carry out an individual compatibility test. In the case of relevant comorbidities or complex medication, we carefully coordinate the recipe and gradually adjust the dose.
Teas, granules, decoctions: which form is right?
The same recipe can be implemented in different forms. The choice is based on effective goals, time required, taste and everyday life. Each form has advantages and disadvantages.
- Tea (infusion/decoction): flexible adaptation, often good bioavailability; requires preparation time
- Granules (standardized extracts): comfortable, easy to dose; more neutral in taste
- Decoction (classic decoction): traditional for complex TCM recipes; time-consuming, but individually controllable
We will explain to you how to make the preparation safe and suitable for everyday use. If the gastrointestinal tract is very sensitive, a slow increase in dosage may make sense.
Safety, quality and education
Herbal medicines have a pharmacologically active effect. That's why quality, safety and information come first. We only use raw materials of tested, pharmacy-standard quality and pay attention to reliable proof of origin.
- Interactions: e.g. E.g. blood thinners, immunosuppressants, anti-diabetics – careful testing is necessary
- Contraindications: among others. Pregnancy/breastfeeding, kidney or liver disease
- Allergies/intolerances: history and, if necessary, careful testing
- Transparency: dosage, duration, instructions for use, possible side effects
If you experience any unusual symptoms (severe nausea, skin reactions, dizziness, signs of bleeding), stop taking the medication and contact your doctor. Safety is a priority.
Evidence: What is proven?
Data from pharmacological investigations and clinical studies exist for individual plants. For example, willow bark and devil's claw extracts have pain-relieving effects in certain dosages; Turmeric and boswellia preparations are being studied for inflammation-modulating properties. The data situation is heterogeneous, formulation quality and dosage are crucial.
Individualized mixtures allow a precisely tailored combination, but are naturally more difficult to test in large studies. We provide transparent information about the benefits, limitations and available evidence - and coordinate the decision with you.
Realistic expectations and progression
Herbal recipes often develop their effect gradually. We typically expect initial feedback after 2-4 weeks, and a reliable assessment of progress after 4-8 weeks. The aim is to provide noticeable support in everyday life, not to replace necessary basic therapies.
- Regular intake and follow-up are important
- Adjustments in case of insufficient effect or side effects
- Integration into an overall program of exercise, physiotherapy, sleep and stress management
Practical tips for taking it
- Schedule fixed times of day; for tea preparation in advance
- Drink enough water; pay attention to stomach tolerance
- Do not increase or combine on your own initiative – please consult
- Store the recipe in a cool, dry place and protected from light
- Everyday travel and work: Granules are often more practical
Flavor aspects can be mildly influenced with lemon, honey or ginger in teas - as long as they are tolerated and medically appropriate.
Costs and reimbursement
The costs depend on the scope of the recipe, the quality of the raw materials and the dosage form. Many statutory health insurance companies do not reimburse individual herbal prescriptions; private payers decide depending on the contract. We will transparently inform you in advance about the expected costs.
