TDP lamp (mineral infrared) in Hamburg
The TDP lamp is a special form of heat therapy from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It works with near-infrared heat, which is emitted by a mineral-coated ceramic plate. In our orthopedic practice at Dorotheenstrasse 48, 22301 Hamburg, we use the TDP lamp as a gentle, accompanying measure - especially for muscular tension and chronic joint problems. The application does not replace well-founded orthopedic diagnostics, but can serve as a component of a conservative, individually tailored therapy concept.

What is a TDP lamp?
TDP stands for “Teding Diancibo Pu”, meaning a mineral-based infrared heat source. In contrast to classic red light lamps, the TDP lamp has a ceramic plate that is coated with a mixture of trace elements and minerals. This plate is heated and produces a soothing spectrum of infrared radiation that is perceived as pleasantly deeply warming.
- Heat source: heated mineral-coated ceramic plate
- Goal: local, uniform deep heat
- Areas of application: especially muscles, tendon attachments, joint surroundings
The TDP lamp is often used in TCM in addition to manual techniques, acupuncture or cupping. In orthopedics we use them primarily to relax muscles and prepare for active therapy (e.g. exercises, stretches, manual therapy).
How does mineral infrared heat work?
Heat is one of the established physical therapy principles. It can stimulate local blood circulation, reduce muscle tone and thus make movement easier. The TDP lamp delivers even, controllable heat, which many patients find particularly pleasant.
- Muscular effects: relaxation of tense muscles, reduction of myofascial trigger points
- Pain relief: Heat can modulate pain processing (gate control, relaxation of the tissue)
- Microcirculation: better tissue blood flow can support metabolism and regeneration
- Vegetative nervous system: Heat often promotes general relaxation
Important: The mineral coating of the TDP lamp is traditionally considered an additional factor. Scientifically reliable data that clearly demonstrates a specific advantage of the mineral plate over conventional infrared heat is currently limited. We therefore use the method responsibly and according to indications.
When can the TDP lamp be useful?
In orthopedic practice, we use the TDP lamp primarily to treat functional and chronic complaints. It is not a replacement for diagnostics, exercise therapy or evidence-based pain therapy, but can support them.
- Muscular tension in the neck, shoulder girdle, back
- Myofascial pain and trigger points
- Degenerative joint problems (e.g. pain associated with osteoarthritis, morning stiffness)
- Tendinopathies and tendon attachment problems (e.g. tennis elbow, Achilles tendon) – outside of acute inflammatory phases
- Chronic lumbar spine/cervical spine syndrome without neurological deficits
- Preparation for acupuncture, Tuina or manual techniques (tissue relaxation)
- Regeneration support after stress in leisure and health sports
Heat is often not indicated for acute, highly inflammatory processes, recent trauma or unclear pain. Here we decide after an examination whether and when heat application is possible.
Process of treatment in our practice
During use, the heat should be perceived as pleasantly deep and relaxing. A burning or heat pain is a warning signal - in this case we immediately adjust the distance, angle or duration.
Evidence: What is proven, where are the limits?
There is solid physiological plausibility and clinical experience for heat therapy in general. There are smaller clinical studies on the TDP lamp in particular, often from Asia, which point to possible benefits for musculoskeletal pain. However, the methodological quality is heterogeneous and direct comparisons to classic infrared therapy are limited.
- Evidence of short to medium-term pain relief and improved mobility for chronic complaints
- Specific additional benefits of the mineral plate are currently not clearly established
- Best results often in combination with active therapy (training, stretching) and structuring everyday life
Our approach: We integrate the TDP lamp as an optional component in a conservative overall concept. The aim is to reduce symptoms, make movement easier and enable activity - without any promise of salvation.
Safety, side effects and contraindications
The TDP lamp is generally well tolerated when used correctly. As with any heat treatment, there are situations in which caution is required or application should be avoided.
- Possible side effects: temporary skin redness, feeling of warmth, rarely dizziness or headache; very rarely superficial burns if the intensity is too high/the distance is too close
- Do not use in the case of: acute inflammatory processes, recent injuries, fever/infections, open wounds, pronounced sensory disorders (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), local thrombosis, active tumors in the treatment area
- Be careful with: severe circulatory disorders, pregnancy (no direct application via the abdomen/lumbar), severe venous disease, cortisone infiltrations in the last few days (wait locally), pronounced sensitivity to heat
- Implants: Metal implants are usually not a problem; Pay attention to the sensation of heat and avoid overheating
Please inform us about any previous illnesses, medications (e.g. blood thinners), skin diseases and pregnancy. We check suitability individually.
Useful combinations in a conservative therapy concept
Heat often has its greatest benefit as a door opener for exercise and manual therapy measures. That's why we often combine the TDP lamp with active and passive components.
- Active therapy: targeted exercises, stretches, posture and ergonomics advice
- Physiotherapy/Manual Therapy: better tissue preparation through heat
- TCM procedures: Acupuncture, Tuina, cupping or moxibustion - depending on the findings and goal
- Self-management: heat packs at home, moderate exercise training, stress reduction
We will discuss which combination makes sense for you after a careful orthopedic and – if desired – TCM-oriented anamnesis.
Frequency, duration and costs
The number and frequency of sessions depend on the symptoms, reaction to the heat and the measures used in parallel.
- Frequency: often 1-3 applications per week in the starting phase
- Treatment duration: usually 15-30 minutes per session
- Duration of therapy: 4-6 weeks depending on the course, followed by a needs-based refresher
Billing is carried out transparently after prior information. In many cases it is a self-pay or private service. We will inform you in advance about expected costs.
Preparation and aftercare
- Before the session: please do not apply any highly occlusive creams/ointments to the treatment area
- Drink enough fluids and wear comfortable, easily accessible clothing
- During the session: feel warmth as pleasant; Please report immediately if it gets too hot
- After the session: rest briefly, then light movement/exercises to stabilize the effect
- Skin observation: if redness or irritation persists, please provide feedback
Who is the TDP lamp suitable for?
The TDP lamp is suitable for patients who want a gentle, non-drug supplement to relieve functional complaints. Realistic expectations are crucial: the aim is to provide supportive pain relief, muscle relaxation and easier movement - ideally in combination with active measures.
Each application is preceded by an individual examination. In this way, we ensure that there are no contraindications and that the heat treatment fits into your personal therapy concept.
